So what has Cade done this time? I trust he hasn't hit a member of the Chantry -- that would mad, even for him.

He—no, monsieur, he has not hit anyone. Certainly not me. He threatened one of the healers, however—Anders. I sympathize with his discomfort, of course, and he did not seem to be in his right mind. [ If he has a right mind. ] But it would not do to begin the war anew in Skyhold's courtyard, I think. Perhaps you might speak to your charges about, ah. More quietly arranging for private assistance if they cannot cooperate with the healers who are present.

Aaaaaaaaah. Yes. He and Anders have a ... checkered history. [To put it mildly.] Cade is from Kirkwall chantry. I shall ... speak directly to all the Templars to assure this does not happen again.

I should also speak to Anders. [He supposes. Argh.]

That I saw, yes. Only words. Ser Cade was on the ground when I arrived, but I believe he had injured his leg, not that he had been struck. He said he would kill the mage if he touched him. So on, so forth.

[Oh great Maker. Now this just sounded like another one of Cade's more serious ... fits of nerves.] I will look into this personally. Thank you for bringing all of this to my attention, Brother.

He restrained an ex-Circle mage who had slapped me. With that there is no fault, gossipers be damned. It is the excess of force he used when instructed to release her and his lack of cognizance of his behavior after the fact which is the concern.

[Well it's not a jail cell - and he had wondered what happened to the man. He was gone all afternoon and that wasn't like Cade at all.]

Could you please ... elaborate on the level of damage the mage suffered? Was it worse or better than what happened with Madame Beleth?

The slap is a long story. Suffice it to say it was fully deserved.

[They can circle back to that after settling the Cade issue.]

No visible harm brought to her person which I am aware of. And I've no word that she went to the healers after. However, he did throw her while obviously in a simmering rage. When I questioned him about it, he did not remember throwing her or why he'd done so.

[All right, he has often wanted to slap a Seeker, so. Moving on.]

This is not the first time that this has happened. [Quietly.] His rages usually happen in a blackout and he doesn't remember anything that he's done.

It is not the first time, but it needs to be the last. No one is well served in allowing him the opportunity to reoffend.

Seeker Reed and I are of shared opinion that a more permanent solution is called for, but a heavy hand will invite more trouble than it prevents.

[A pause. Because Aleron does absolutely nothing in a hurry. Everything must be weighed and measured and considered at length before he takes action.]

After extensive review, I do not consider him having gone rogue. However, I feel madness is an apt description of what ails him.

No, no they are not. Cade needs help - I am just not sure what help can be offered. However, now that you have seen this as I have ... you can see why I have been reluctant to remove him from the Templar Order. This is the only organization that gives him focus. He is a danger to himself and to others if left unfettered.

[A delicate pause, as he quietly added.]

Please remember, this is what happened with Samson. We cannot fail Cade as we failed him.

[A long sigh.] ... we should speak with Madame Beleth. She knows him better than either one of us, truly.

Unfortunately his ties to the Templar Order are not serving to prevent these outbursts.

[There's some stupid politics involved with mages and templars that Aleron isn't going to touch with a ten foot pole because he doesn't actually care how people see it. Truth is what concerns him at present.]

I am reminded of Meredith and the terror inflicted as a result of her own madness. Cade cannot be permitted to continue following in her footsteps.

It is our recommendation that he be stricken from the Templar Order and remanded into the care of the Inquisition as its ward.

You cannot do that. You must not do that. If you do that you will allow someone who is mentally unbalanced to be unfettered completely. We failed him, Seeker. We. Not Meredith - but people like you and myself failed that man. You cannot just cut him away because he is another sin you wish to hide under the rug! He is our responsibility!

James... I.... [His voice is faltering as he feels panic still in his entire body. He knows he can't just let it be though. This is dangerous. Someone has to do something. Someone official has to know.]

I need to report someone for openly discussing dealing with demons to gain power. I don't know what to do. Please tell me what to do.

[The briefest of pauses.]

Maker's Breath, Carolus, do they know who you are?

[Hearing him respond so quickly helps to calm some of the panic in Carolus's chest. He takes a breath, remembering all of the details the woman shared.]

Her name is Jane. She's a Rifter. I don't know if she understands what she was saying, but she was so casual about it... It was scary.

I don't know where exactly she is. We were talking on the crystals. Anyone who was listening in would have heard her! We need to make sure people don't panic, right? I panicked when I heard what she was saying I just stopped talking to her instead of trying to get more information.

Oh! She did mention a friend, though. Dolores! I don't know if Dolores is a Rifter too? That might help you find her.

Carolus, I want you to lock the door to your chambers and not let anyone in. I am going to send one of the Ostwick templars to guard your door ... [Wait, wait.] If I have your permission to do so.

I ... am going to go speak to those involved with Rifter relations. We need to know what kind of threat this truly is, but I am taking no chances.

Yeah, except if Mal shows up. They have to know to let her in. [He's probably going to reach out to her next once the reporting part is over.]

They may test her to make sure that she is not a blood mage hidden in Mal's form, but yes, I will let the Templar I know know.

It will be all right, Carolus. Just ... do not go spreading this around. We were a hairsbreadth away from a riot over phylacteries. I do not want to think about what will happen if we falsely arrest a Rifter for dealing with demons - when we do not know what demons mean to her.
